**Office Closure: Monday November 11th for Remembrance Day**
Do you remember when you could rent a movie from the corner gas station? The movie rental business was not their core business it was a sideline to their core business of selling gas. Many orthotic providers operate in a similar way. Providing foot orthotics are an add on to their core business.
Pacific Pedorthic manufactures your custom foot orthotic from raw materials.
There is both an art and science to making good foot orthotics. Education and experience count. Many providers lack the equipment, skills and training to provide local adjustments to the devices.
We manufacture, adjust, repair and rebuild foot orthotics in our Nanaimo lab, with rapid turnaround times. Typically we can provide you with a pair of custom orthotics within 2 to 3 weeks of your initial appointment. If you have moved to town we can often repair and adjust orthotics made by other orthotic providers.
Orthotic providers who send their orthotics out to be made also have to send them out to be repaired and adjusted resulting in long wait times and higher cost.
It all starts with a complete history of your problem. This is followed by a clinical and biomechanical examination to determine the most appropriate course of treatment.
Your orthotics are created right here in Nanaimo using CAD/CAM software to meet your specific needs. Materials are chosen to provide the best solution to you. We create truly custom devices for only you.
With the orthotic design complete a CNC milling system is used to cut a positive form for your orthotics. The required plastics are heated and pressed to the form to create your custom foot orthotics.
The orthotic is carefully hand shaped to fit each individual foot. This is the point when craftsmanship, experience and science are combined in manufacturing your devices.
Throughout the manufacturing process your orthotics are measured and remeasured to ensure the orthotic meets our exacting standards.
The interaction between your custom foot orthotics and shoes is critical. The best foot orthotics will not be effective with the wrong shoes. To get the best results from your foot orthotics they should be selected for and directly fit to your shoes. We can often custom fit your orthotics into difficult to fit footwear such as sandals.
Custom Fit Orthotics
This term is often used by the mall kiosks that look at pressures on the bottom of your feet and then sell you an insole from one of a few choices available on the shelf. There is nothing "custom" in the process.
Off the Shelf Insoles
These are arch supports of varying levels of support that are pre-manufactured. They can best be compared to reading glasses that you buy for under $20 in the drug store. They can be helpful for minor complaints.
Customized Orthotics
These types of inserts are made from a standard shell that is taken off the shelf and modified with extra additions to make them more specific to a persons needs. Typically provided by a health care provider that does not specialize in foot orthotics, but provides orthotics as an extra service in addition to their core business. They often have you walk across a computerized mat to "make the orthotic".
Custom Orthotics
Custom Orthotics are produced by taking a 3 dimensional impression of your foot. The 3-D image has historically been obtained by wrapping your foot in plaster bandages, and waiting for them to harden, thereby producing a "cast". The 3-D impression can now be obtained by a variety of methods including 3-D laser Imaging. The "cast" is then used to produce a positive which is a model of your foot in the corrected position, which the custom foot orthotic is built on. A 3-D image can not be taken by walking across a computerized pressure mat.
